This is Project Runeberg's electronic facsimile edition of a Norwegian book from 1878, documenting the influence on modern geometry of French mathematician Jean-Victor Poncelet (1788-1867). The text is written by Elling Holst and the book was published by Sophus Lie, two prominent Norwegian mathematicians. The text is in Norwegian, which in 1878 was very similar to Danish.
The author makes many references to a previous work by Michel Chasles (1793-1880), Aperçu historique sur l'origine et le développement des méthodes en géometrie (1837).
The physical book belongs to and was digitized by the University of
Michigan, where it is available as item
ACV2565. Project Runeberg copied the scanned images and
raw OCR text from there in February 2007, including the
Bibliographic record target found on the
first image. Page sequence numbers have been kept. The quality of
the raw OCR text is poor; apparently the OCR process has not been
guided by an appropriate dictionary.
This volume was scanned by the University of Michigan,
from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg.
We very much appreciate that they have made this possible
and want to encourage other digital library projects to
follow their example. Read more about Project Runeberg's
image sources.
