Preface to the electronic edition
Olof Hammarsten’s Lärobok i fysiologisk kemi first appeared
in Swedish in 1883, having 616 pages, 2nd edition 1889, having only
443 pages, and followed by an abridged Kortfattad lärobok i
fysiologisk kemi (1904) having 350 pages, with many subsequent
editions.
In German translation (apparently by the author himself),
Lehrbuch der physiologischen Chemie
was published in 1891, saw its 4th and revised edition in 1899, and
7th edition in 1910. The 8th and revised German edition (1914) was
made in collaboration with S. G. Hedin, and the 10th German edition
(1923) also with J. E. Johansson and T. Thunberg. The 11th edition
appeared in 1926.
The English translation (also called American edition) by
Swedish-born John Mandel first appeared in 1893, having 500
pages. Shown here is the 7th American edition (1914), based on the 8th
German edition from the same year.
There are also translations in Italian: Manuale die chemica
fisiologica (1893), and Russian: Учебникъ физіологической
химіи (СПБ. 1905) О. Гаммарстена.
A copy of the 7th American edition (1914) in Columbia University
(in the City of New York) was digitized in May 2010 for the Internet
Archive, from where the scanned images and OCR text in April 2023 were
copied to Project Runeberg.
This volume was scanned elsewhere and made available by the Internet Archive,
from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg.
We very much appreciate that they have made this possible
and want to encourage other digital library projects to
follow their example. Read more about Project Runeberg's
image sources.
