Preface to the electronic edition
August Strindberg wrote Inferno after a personal crisis in
the years 1894-1896. It was written in French; a translation into
Swedish by Eugène Fahlstedt was published in 1897; in 1898 the French
original was published. That Swedish translation with minor edits also
appears in Strindberg's collected works (volume 28 of Samlade skrifter, 1914), which we digitized
in April 2004.
A Danish translation by Viggo Adler, Helvede was published
in 1897, a German in 1898, a Polish by Karol Bicz in 1899, a German by
Emil Schering in 1910, a German by Christian Morgenstern in 1919, a
Croatian by Ratko Parezanin in 1920, a Hungarian by Lajos Mikes in
1921, a Danish by Sven Lange in 1924, an Italian by Giulio Ricci in
1925, an Italian by Carlo Picchio in 1950, a German by Tabitha von
Bonin in 1959.
This English translation by Claud Field was first published in
1912. A copy printed in 1913 in the University of California Libraries
has been digitized in April 2008 for the Internet Archive, from where
the scanned images and OCR text in March 2020 were copied to Project
Runeberg.
