Zacharias Topelius
(1818-1898) is one of Finland's most famous and important authors of
the 19th century. This is one of his novels, its title translates to
"The Duchess of Finland", and it claims to give an account of the war
of 1741-1743 (wars in this part of the world are always Finland vs
Russia).
The edition used for digitization constitutes volume 7 of the
author's collected works (Samlade skrifter), which were
published in Stockholm (and in Helsinki), starting in the year after
his death. The following is unconfirmed: This novel was first
published in Helsinki in 1850. The original language is Swedish. The
Finnish version (Suomen herttuatar) was first published in
1874. The same novel also appeared as part of another collection
(Vinterqvällar) in 1881, published in Finnish (Talvi-iltain
tarinoita) in 1885.
The 263 text pages are presented as facsimile images, in 120 dpi
grayscale GIF format, in combination with the unprocessed ("raw") text
from optical character recognition (OCR).
Hertiginnan af Finland was originally published in
Helsingfors 1850, by A. W. Gröndahl. The original book differs
greatly from the latter published in Samlade arbeten. It consists on
two parts, one (mostly) historical and the other (mostly) fictive.
For instance the character Diagonus Elg does not appear in the
original. The original has never been translated. The original
version's table of contents is as follows:
