Preface to the electronic edition
This book has
its own
article in Wikipedia. It is not a translation, it was written in
English by Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal and first published in the
United States in 1944. As stated in the author's preface, it is a
joint work of several people; two of the co-authors are named on the
title page, but we prefer to view it as a work of the main author
alone.
Gunnar and his wife Alva Myrdal in a will bequeathed their
copyright to a fund, which is now maintained by the City of
Stockholm. In April 2011, the city's committee on cultural affairs
decided to release the copyright under the Creative Commons
Attribution Share Alike (CC-BY-SA) license.
This book has been digitized several times. Several copies can be
found on the Internet Archive, some of them with some pages missing.
We have used one containing all pages, with only some minor scanning
errors at the bottom of a few pages. The resolution is not as good as
we would wish. Some of the small print is hard to read. This copy was
scanned in July 2015 somewhere in India and uploaded in January 2017.
In April 2020, the scanned images and OCR text were copied to Project
Runeberg, to allow for online proofreading.
This volume was scanned elsewhere and made available by the Internet Archive,
from where the scanned images were copied to Project Runeberg.
We very much appreciate that they have made this possible
and want to encourage other digital library projects to
follow their example. Read more about Project Runeberg's
image sources.
